Canada is also outstanding in terms of education, regularly proven by its PISA rankings. Did you know? SCHOOL SYSTEM High school policies in Canada are decided by each region individually. In British Columbia and Ontario school takes 12 years. Secondary school either lasts from year 8-12 in British Columbia or from year 9 until the end in Ontario. Students are between 13-18 years old during this time. Canada is a bilingual English-French-speaking country however, in British Columbia and Ontario the official language is English. The school year starts at the beginning of September and lasts until the end of June. In general, the school year is composed of two semesters. International students can either start at the beginning of the school year in September or in the second semester in January. SUBJECT SELECTION Canadian schools impress with a grand variety of subjects. Those subjects range from academic subjects that you know from your home country to lots of other courses that you have never heard of or that do not exist in your home schedule. Fashion Design, Photography, Robotics, school band, Graphic Design as well as Mechanics are options to learn about at most of the Canadian schools. Due to the great outdoors Canadian students grow up tightly connected to nature. Not just on weekends or during the holidays students spend a lot of time doing outdoor activities like kayaking, snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, climbing and swimming. Therefore, Canadian High schools offer a vast variety of sports including outdoor activities, as well as tennis, basketball, volleyball, rugby or hockey.
